Piet Mondrian – his path to Abstraction

Mondrian’s path to Abstract art followed that of almost all abstract artists. At first he was taught to draw then paint and he was inspired by Paul Cezanne and Vincent van Gogh. Gradually he migrated to Cubism through Picasso. This was the beginning of Mondrian’s use of straight lines in his paintings, without the three dimensional aspect. His paintings were flatter and gradually became less busy.

Is Mondrian an abstract artist?

Mondrian is now regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. His use of crosses – vertical and horizontal lines to represent his view of the world eventually lead to large and small squares and rectangles. These were then filled with primary colours. Piet Mondrian Composition

Mondrian through his journey into abstract art developed a two dimensional geometric process of painting that was popularly known as Neo-Plasticism. Thick black vertical and horizontal lines that divide up the canvas and then were fill in with red, yellow and blue make Mondrian’s abstract art most noticable.

This is an early example of the geometric mode of painting that Mondrian called Neo-Plasticism.
The abstract two-dimensional nature of these compositions formed a new universal aesthetic language that was popularized through the magazine De Stijl. Mondrian uses thick black lines to divide the canvas into eleven different rectangles, some of which are painted in primary shades of red and blue.
