Blue and its help with mental health

The colour blue is all around us. Unless you really think about it, you are probably unaware how much blue our eyes see each day. First of all there is the blue sky. It is amazing how much impact looking at a blue sky will make us feel happier than on a grey sky day. Waking up in the morning to a dry warm blue sky will affect our mental health for the better. If you can also look out upon a blue expanse of water; even better!

A blue sea view together with a blue sky will in general make the day seem happier and better for most of us. Blue colour has many emotional effects on our mind. Here are a few – 

  • stability – People often describe blue as the colour of stability probably because when there are blue skies and calm weather without the threat of storms, we have stable conditions.
  • relaxation – Blue is said to decrease respiration and lower blood pressure. The bedroom is a great place to use these colours as they should help you relax. Again we come back to the sky and the sea being settled, calm and stable. Therefore, we can relax and not worry about things.
  • restfulness – This is similar to relaxation. The reason so many bedrooms have a blue based colour in them is because it aids the sense of restfulness. The senses such as pulse rate and blood pressure tend to slow and lower, respectively.
  • tranquility – Imagine looking at a calm blue sea with blue skies above and the sound of waves gently touching the sandy beach in front of you. Would that not give you a sense of tranquility?
  • trust and trustworthiness. – When trying to build a relationship with another business person, it is a good idea to wear Blue as the dominent colour. This conveys trust in you, subconsciously.
  • truth – As mentioned in trust above, to be able to trust someone you need to believe they are speaking the truth. One-to-one communcation relies on people verbally speaking the truth, if good things are to happen.
  • unity – Togetherness and integrity relate to a feeling of unity. Blue is regarded as providing these emotions.
  • wisdom – Blue had a benefical effect on childrens ability to learn; wisdom is the result. As we read, listen, look and create we gain wisdom.
